Paris Schmaris
by Fred Ritchie

Brooklyn: To Pete Hamill: If you and your wife wish to be truly patriotic, why not spend your tax rebate right here in New York City instead of in Paris? ("Ameria must be open to voices of its critics," June 1 Opinion column.)

You could start the day with a cup of coffee and a bagel in one of the hundreds of luncheonettes in lower Manhattan as you read the Daily News and watch the bustling crowds on their way to work. You could buy books at Barnes & Noble or the Strand. You could visit the Brooklyn Museum and the Bronx Zoo. You could gaze at the hallowed ground where the twin towers stood.

You could climb the palisades near the Cloisters, go to a Broadway musical or catch a game at Shea. You could dine on the best franks in the world at Nathan's Famous in Coney Island or on brick-oven pizza at Goodfella's on Hylan Blvd. Afterwards, sip your coffee on the Staten Island ferry as you sail back to Manhatten passing by the Statue of Liberty, a girt from France.

Maybe a vacation here doesn't fit you political agenda - but this city sure could use your tax rebate now.
