Goodfella's Victory Boulevard
Michael Rose
Goodfellas has long been recognized as one of Staten Island's premier pizzerias. To that end, Goodfellas franchises are available and there are currently three on Staten Island -- the newest one having opened recently on Victory Boulevard in Castleton Corners.
The great thing about a franchise is that consumers pretty much know what to expect. Having opened within a mile of two other long-running pizzerias -- Al's Pizzeria and Joe and Pat's -- this newest Goodfellas may be facing a tough task.
Happily, the food seems up to the challenge.
North Shore residents have to appreciate the fact that they can skip the drive to Hylan Boulevard or Rossville if the urge for a Goodfellas pie suddenly hits them.
The menu contains a small selection of appetizers. The fried calamari ($6.95) is a "must taste" for seafood lovers. The lightly coated rings are crisp and flavorful, and the dipping sauce, although unnecessary, is a zesty marinara.
Also worth sampling is the garlic bread ($2.95). Fresh Italian bread is grilled and then seasoned appropriately. Several of the pieces were cut into small triangles, resembling the larger pizza slices.
Although the appetizers are inviting, you don't want to get filled up. After all, the pizza is why one goes to Goodfellas.
Pies are available in three variations: Small, $8.95; Large, $14.95 and Square, $10.95.
A small plain pie can feed two, provided, of course, that one isn't starving. With its crisp crust, fresh mozzarella and robust tomato sauce, it's hard to believe that this is a plain pie.
Happily, Goodfellas also offers a selection of specialty pies for the more adventurous. In addition to the award-winning Pizza a la Vodka, there is the quattro formaggi (four cheeses), the quattro stagioni (four seasons) and quattro cantone (four corners).
The four cheeses features a pie topped with mozzarella, fontina, provolone and romano cheese while the four seasons is topped with mozzarella, artichoke hearts, black olives, prosciutto and mushrooms.
Can't agree on the toppings? Then the "four corners" is your pie. Patrons can add one topping to each quarter of the pie, and the possibilities range from various meats and vegetables to something as simple as extra cheese.
For those looking for something other than pizza, Goodfellas offers a selection of pasta dishes, sandwiches and salads. The Caesar salad with grilled chicken ($7.95) offers a healthy portion of greens, topped with large pieces of white meat, croutons and the house Caesar dressing.
Goodfellas also offers lunch specials as well as a "Family Deal" for those watching their budgets.
Dinner for two adults and two children with two appetizers, two pies, a Caesar salad and beverages came to $59.04 without tip.
